Samsung Galaxy S III

The Samsung Galaxy S III

Most anticipated Android Phone of the year is launched on May 3rd in London. Here are the specs this beast possess up its sleeve.

Screen: 4.8” Super Amoled HD display

Storage: 16/32/64GB depending on model, plus expandable MicroSD card

Cloud storage: 50GB Dropbox for two years

Colour: Pebble blue or marble white

Battery: 2,100mAh (wireless charging optional extra)

Camera: 8MP rear; 1.9 MP front

Resolution: 720 x 1280 px (306ppi)

RAM: 1GB

Dimensions: 136.6 x 70.6 x 8.55 mm

Weight: 133g

Operating System: Android 4.0.4

Processor: Exynos 4412 Quad (1.4GHz)

Eye tracking and wireless charging features are step forward. Samsung has given more importance to software part too along with the hardware. And we cant wait to see how good it perform.

The Pentile Display instead of normal RGB could offend some people who look out for microscopic details. Given the 306ppi, Pentile/RGB arrangement should not matter much since its hardly noticeable to eyes.

Design was never Samsung's forte and Galaxy S III carry forward that tradition. Phone looks just average specially when compared with HTC One X and Sony Xperia NXT series. Good addition here which was missing in earlier models is Notification LED. I feel the design will grow over you once you start using it.

Camera is 8MP with zero shutter lag. We expected 12MP shooter here, but if the optics on S III are good then who are we to complain. Remember its not always about MegaPixels.

Hardware under the hood is impressive. The Quad Core Exynos 4412 built on 32nm offers almost the double processing power than previous Exynos while saving 20% power.

The Mali400MP4 GPU offers 66% increase in 3D performance over the SII, which is significant. It even outdo the powerful PowerVR SGX 543MP2 GPU of the iPhone 4S and closes on to PowerVR SGX 543MP4 GPU of the new iPad.

Samsung Galaxy S III Retains the microSD card slot as well as removable battery, which is a good thing.

Latest trend of offering limited storage and non-removable battery is restrictive and should be done away with.

Overall, this phone is an evolution rather than a revolution. It is a decent upgrade over S II, but we still feel few things could have been better.

So, If you are in the market for the greatest android phone, Samsung Galaxy S III and HTC One X are the two phones you should consider. Choose HTC One X if you prefer better design and Build Quality. If you love the SAMOLED HD screen, need raw processing power, extra storage, removable battery and better developer support then S III is better choice. Overall I would rate Galaxy S III just above the One X.

Kudos to the HTC, they are back in the game. Samsung needs to up their game to retain their title.

30k+ Smartphones : Q1 2012

Lets have a look at deserving candidates ...

# Samsung Galaxy S II

# Motorola Razr

# Samsung Galaxy Note

# (Upcoming) Samsung Galaxy Nexus

#  Apple iPhone 4S

# HTC Sensation XE

All the above phones are available in the market for more or less 30k INR except iPhone 4S which ridiculously starts at 44k INR...

Galaxy Nexus is not launched yet here in India, but it would cost around 30k initially, unless Samsung decides to go Apple way which is highly unlikely...

Lets sum up the important points about each phone:

Galaxy S II : Superb SAMOLED+ Display, Huge Developer support at XDA, Powerful Exynos Chipset.                              But build quality is bit plasticky and may not appeal to all. Screen resolution is standard 480x800 while others have qHD or 720p resolution.

Motorola Razr: Fantastic Build quality, Crisp display and Design. OMAP 4430 chipset is in its midlife and its GPU PowerVR SGX540 is the same as of Galaxy S... All in all chipsetwise it falls short to S II's Exynos...

Galaxy Note: For those who are blessed with Large Palms. Its gorgeous 5.3" SAMOLD display at 800x1280 will appeal to you. Once you own this devide, you wont be able to go to lower screen size phones again. Its powerful Exynos chipset will take care of your demanding tasks.

Galaxy Nexus: 3rd Vanilla Google Experience phone, with its 720p HD Display and Ice Cream Sandwich Android version, you'll not go wrong with this handset. Its powered by descent OMAP 4460 chipset, which does the job well. But camera is just 5MP, so if your looking for good cameraphone, steer clear...

Apple iPhone 4S: Ridiculously Priced in India... 44k for 16GB version and goes upto 60k for 64GB version. If you are ok with closed apple ecosystem, android feels too geeky to you and if you've got a lot of moolah then go for this. Good thing about it is its superb camera and easy to use interface...

HTC Sensation XE: This Qualcomm Dual Core beast offers good performance close to Exynos. Its bundled with good pair of headphones and HTC marketed it as musicphone. Camera is OKish and Screen is descent especially all other phones pack SAMOLED or Retina Display. Battery backup is poor...Get it only if you are a HTC Fan...

Summing it up, If I were you to buy a phone in the range of 30k my choices would be ... (In that order)

  1. Salsung Galaxy Note (I'm Comfortable with its size :) )
  2. Samsung Galaxy Nexus
  3. Samsung Galaxy S II
  4. Motorola Razr
  5. Apple iPhone 4S
  6. HTC Sensation XE

Few phones which were not included in this list for the reasons:
Nokia Lumia 800 : Although its descent package, but 25k price for windows phone having old gen chipset is little too much.
SonyEricsson Arc S: Single core chipset, overpriced.
LG Optimus 3D / HTC Evo 3D: Poor Battery Life and 3D is just a gimmick ...

If I have missed any phone, let me know :) ...
